Pulmonary rehabilitation is probably the most effective therapy for COPD patients with emphysema. Graded physical exercise, proper breathing techniques, education about the disease and available therapies empowers the patient. It improves quality of life and decrease hospitalization.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

What is a Respiratory Therapist?

Respiratory therapists help people who suffer from respiratory diseases such as COPD, emphysema, asthma, bronchitis, IPF, CF and sarcoidosis. Respiratory therapists have knowledge of underlying cardiopulmonary physiology and pathophysiology, as well biomedical technology. All of this knowledge enables our RT’s to effectively assess, educate and treat patients with pulmonary disorders.

What is Pulmonary Rehab?

Pulmonary rehabilitation is a broad program that helps improve the well being of people who have chronic breathing problems.

It includes…

Exercise training

Nutritional counseling

Education on specific lung disease or condition

How to manage the disease or condition

Energy conserving techniques

Breathing strategies

Who needs Pulmonary Rehab?

Your doctor may recommend pulmonary rehab if you have a chronic lung disease or a condition that makes it difficult for you to breathe and limits your activities. You may benefit from pulmonary rehab if you have any lung condition previously mentioned, wear oxygen, awaiting a lung transplant or are in the mist of trying to stop smoking.

What are the benefits of Pulmonary Rehab?

Pulmonary rehab cannot cure your lung disease or completely relieve your breathing problems. However, pulmonary rehab does have many benefits.

Improve your quality of life

Help function better in your daily life

Increase your ability to exercise

Decrease the symptoms of your disease or condition

Help you manage anxiety and depression

You also may have fewer breathing problems as a result of pulmonary rehab. Although it does not improve your lung function, it allows you to make the most of the limited lung function that you have.

What should I expect after pulmonary rehabilitation?

Most pulmonary rehabilitation programs last a few months. After you complete the program you will have learned a new life style that you will need to continue and maintain. Our facility offers a post therapy program and will offer support group meetings.

What insurances does your office accept?

Our facility accepts all commercial insurance as well as Medicare and Medicaid. If for any reason we are not able to accept your insurance plan, we will work with you to make sure that the therapy you need will be given.
